City walks
Munich is one of Germany’s most popular travel destinations – the mains sights are “Marienplatz”, the square in heart of the city, the town hall and the Glockenspiel (carillon), the International and Bavarian culinary delights of the food market (famous Viktualienmarkt), the Isar river, the Cathedral and - last but not least - the Hofbraeu House – just to mention a few !
But Munich has much more to offer: let me take you through the fashionable shopping malls, let me tell you the background of the sculptures, paintings and other artworks in the many museums of our "art district", visit with me the Olympic grounds and take the elevator up the Olympic tower to see Munich’s skyline with a view all the way down to the Alps.
Marvel over the futuristic architecture of the new “BMW-World” with its floating roof – one of the first constructions of a new generation of 21st century communication buildings - and realize that the roof, covering the Olympic buildings of 1972, is still today a fascinating structure.
If you have any special wishes for your stay in Munich please let me know - I am sure together we can work out an unforgettable Munich-experience for you !
Here are already some suggestions what I can show you during your stay in Munich:
Munich’s Historical Centre:
A stroll through the Old Town of Munich begins at the main square "Marienplatz" (heart and soul of the city) with the Old and the New Town Hall and carillon. We continue on to beloved Old St. Peter's Church, to the food market, through the pedestrian zone to our monumental Cathedral of Our Lady. Of course this walk can be combined with other high lights. My aim is to show you art, culture, and to provide an insight to the life of Munich’s past and present.
Olympic Park in Munich:
Post war Germany's first Olympic Games were held at the site of a former military airport. The architecture was an overwhelming success in 1972 and the tent-like transparent roofs electrify us still today. Marvel over the ever changing history of the so-called “Oberwiesenfeld”, the Olympic mountain, and the fate of father Timmofei from Russia. From the soaring Olympic tower you have a brilliant view not only of the Olympic Park, the BMW World, but also of Munich’ skyline and of the not so distant Alps.
Munich’s Residence, Cuvilliés Theater and Opera House:
The residence of Bavaria's royal family is a vast complex of different architectural periods. One of its most beautiful attractions is the 18th century Cuvilliés Theater in rococo style closely connected with the history of opera in Munich. Next door is the large Opera House, witness to triumph and tragedy: world famous premiers, terrible destruction, and then beautifully rebuilt – thanks to the strong will of the Munich’s’ citizens.
Walks through Munich’s neighbourhoods: “Hostels, Houses, Courtyards”
Off the beaten track we find the posh quarter of Schwabing, Munich’s Greenwich Village, or Bogenhausen with town houses and villas, or the new “exhibition City” in Riem. Each neighborhood of Munich gives evidence of its inhabitants and their traditions. Everywhere you find typical houses, cozy corners, surprising beauty– Munich, the Bavarian Metropolis, has many different faces.
Museum Quarter in Munich:
A Mecca for art lovers is the Museums’ Quarter or “art district” located between the Königsplatz (King's square) and the Tuerkentor (Turkish gate). Here we have some truly remarkable structures created to house the marvelous old collections of the Bavarian rulers and works of contemporary art.
