Bustours
Munich is a city with nearly 1000 years of
history which is made up of many stories – there is so much to say, to see
and to learn: founded by the Bavarian Duke Henry the Lion in 1158, the
Wittelsbach family came into power in 1180 and made Munich their residence
and the capital of Bavaria. They ruled over 700 years in our country and
over the centuries Munich has developed into a metropolis of nearly 1 1/2
million inhabitants.
Art Nouveau was born in Munich with the
painter Franz von Stuck; Expressionism developed when when the painters
Wassily Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky, Gabriele Muenter, Lyonel
Feiniger, the composer Arnold Schoenberg and other artists founded the
"Blaue Reiter" (Blue Rider), an association of artists that revolutionized
the arts, foremost the art of painting.
Munich’s
Ludwig-Maximilians-University is a university of the elite. In Munich
lived artistic geniuses like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Richard Wagner or
Thomas Mann – they called Munich home for a while, just like the
resistance fighters Sophie and Hans Scholl, Professor Huber or in our time
– Josef Ratzinger, the present Pope Benedict XVI.
Enjoy Munich’s
highlights: Marienplatz (Munich’s main square), the Opera House, the
Olympic Park, Nymphenburg Palace (Summer Residence of the Wittelsbach
rulers) and Schwabing (the “bohemian” quarter of Munich).
